San Gimignano's medieval towers leave most visitors thinking nothing in Tuscany could impress them more. Then they find Tenuta Torciano, a winery with a character, where everything comes from the heart.
Once San Gimignano has worked its magic, it is only a 15-minute drive, following the signs for Ulignano, to Tenuta Torciano, a wine estate tucked between Florence and Siena. From the road it looks like a modest property, wrapped in endless vineyards of Vernaccia white grapes, welcoming guests in typical Tuscan style.

A warm, honest "Benvenuti" - welcome, in Italian - from your hosts makes you feel truly at home with the Giachi family from the first minute.
They bring genuine devotion to every visitor and to every bottle of wine. Fifteen family generations, not just of winemakers but of Tuscan countryside people, shaped by the soil that has given them everything. For the Giachi family, real quality of life is measured in moments with family, friends and a glass of wine.

History
Tenuta Torciano, past and present
It all began with Bartolomeo Giachi, some three hundred years ago, and the family's passion for wine has carried through every generation since, each one taking on the winemaking business in its own way.
Today the estate carries an almost artistic touch under its current owner, Pierluigi Giachi. During wine tasting groups his calm voice, patience and devotion to what he loves most are unmistakable. He talks about the family's wine lands around San Gimignano, and about their properties near Montalcino, in the Chianti hills and around Montepulciano. Every visit to the Tenuta Torciano tasting room is a reminder that wellbeing is really the simplicity of life, shared with the Giachi family's warmth.

The tasting
Let the wine tasting begin
The table is set with wild boar salami, pecorino cheese, homemade balsamic vinegar aged 30 years and truffle olive oil - the flavors of Tuscany laid out while the noble wines make their way to the glass. The tasting itself is guided by a Giachi family member and Wine Sommelier, whose English accent, wine expertise, humor and open heart have become a symbol of Tenuta Torciano.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano opens the tasting with its fruity, refreshing character from the gentle hills around the winery. Chianti follows, then Chianti Classico. Next comes the moment the Sommelier's voice always slows down for: Brunello di Montalcino, the "blood line" of Tuscany, a red made of 100% Sangiovese grapes and one of Italy's most famous wines. More salami arrives, bread drizzled with spicy olive oil, and the super Tuscan reds Cavaliere and Bartolomeo.
Full-bodied wines, plenty of humor and cheerful faces around the table make it hard to choose what to ship home: a case of Brunello at 50 euros a bottle, instead of 100 euros in a restaurant, or a bottle of Bartolomeo, a wine impossible to find anywhere but here. Many of the estate's wines have won major international titles, but your hosts care most about your enjoyment of the moment. The list closes with Vin Santo, a sweet, amber dessert wine traditionally served with cantucci, the Tuscan almond biscuits meant for dipping.

It is hard to describe the atmosphere after tasting through all these flavors of Tuscany. Once again, food and wine at Tenuta Torciano show a character that is genuinely hard to match.
After every visit, the spirit of this place and the warmth of the Giachi family stay with you. Music and singing on the bus back become a given, after a place where simplicity, passion and open hearts go hand in hand with centuries of tradition and family love.

Wine magic slowly takes over: walking barefoot through Tuscan vineyards, you cannot help but think - isn't this life so beautiful?
