Every year, on the last Monday of May, the United States celebrates Memorial Day, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces. Here are three things to do to mark the day.

1

Honor

Put flags or flowers on the graves of those who served in wars, and fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon. Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines, join a National Moment of Remembrance, or take part in a parade.

Colors

Set a beautiful table in red, blue and white, the colors of the flag, and enjoy the weekend with friends and family — a lovely way to celebrate with those you love. You can even build dishes around these colors, especially with fruit.

Cheers

Whether it's a barbecue, a picnic, lunch in the garden or dinner at home, having the right wine on the table matters. To start, for an aperitif, prepare a sparkling wine sangria.

Cheese and vegetables are perfect with a white wine, fresh and light as Vernaccia di San Gimignano. During the barbecue, you may prefer a strong red wine like Chianti Classico, and for dessert, a meditation wine to sip at the end of the meal.
