During the barbarian invasions, Bishop San Geminiano is said to have saved San Gimignano from Attila's Huns by hiding it under a thick blanket of fog.

Every year on 31 January, stalls fill the historic center from the early morning through the day, and the town gathers for Holy Mass in the Collegiate Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
